Vehicle Overview

The Monteverdi Military 230-M was a prototype all-terrain military vehicle developed in 1979 by the Swiss automobile manufacturer Monteverdi. Known primarily for its luxury grand tourers and sport utility vehicles, Monteverdi sought to expand its product range into the defense sector with the 230-M, offering a lightweight, four-wheel-drive vehicle intended for use by the Swiss Army. The 230-M was based on the chassis and mechanical components of the International Harvester Scout, a platform previously employed by Monteverdi for its Safari SUV. This robust and proven base was modified to suit military requirements. The bodywork was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Carrozzeria Fissore, a coachbuilding firm that worked closely with Monteverdi during the 1970s. The resulting design was utilitarian and minimal, featuring flat body panels, exposed hinges, and a high ground clearance to support operation in difficult terrain. The vehicle’s construction emphasized simplicity and practicality. It featured an open-body configuration with a foldable canvas roof and removable soft doors, allowing for rapid transformation depending on mission requirements. The interior was stripped down to its essentials, with accommodations for four occupants and basic instrumentation. Rear seating and storage space could be adapted for carrying cargo or additional equipment. Power was delivered via a front-mounted four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a manual transmission and a selectable four-wheel-drive system. This drivetrain configuration gave the 230-M competent off-road capabilities, positioning it as a viable candidate for roles such as reconnaissance, transport, and general utility within a military context. Despite fulfilling many of the technical and functional criteria expected from such a vehicle, the Monteverdi Military 230-M did not advance beyond the prototype stage. The Swiss Army ultimately opted not to proceed with procurement, and Monteverdi did not pursue further military vehicle development. Only one unit of the 230-M is known to exist, preserved today as a rare example of the company’s attempt to diversify its production scope.
