Monteverdi Safari 5 Doors

The Monteverdi Safari 5 Doors.

Vehicle Overview

The Monteverdi Safari 5-Door is a singular prototype luxury sport utility vehicle constructed by Monteverdi Automobiles in 1979. The vehicle represents an extension of the three-door Monteverdi Safari, a model introduced in 1976 as part of the Swiss manufacturer’s effort to position itself within the emerging market for high-end, off-road-capable vehicles. The design and construction of the 5-Door variant were carried out in collaboration with Carrozzeria Fissore, the Italian coachbuilding firm responsible for several Monteverdi projects. The 5-Door configuration retained the angular body lines and formal aesthetic of the original Safari, but introduced a stretched wheelbase and a second set of side doors. This modification enhanced accessibility and passenger capacity without compromising the vehicle’s upright stance or its integration of luxury elements. The interior appointments included leather upholstery, air conditioning, and an array of instrumentation designed to appeal to clientele accustomed to premium touring vehicles rather than utilitarian transport. Mechanically, the 5-Door Safari employed a 5.7-litre V8 engine sourced from International Harvester, consistent with the standard Safari. This powerplant was mated to an automatic transmission and offered in combination with a selectable four-wheel-drive system, enabling operation in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive modes. The chassis and drivetrain architecture were derived from the International Harvester Scout, a common donor platform for Monteverdi’s off-road vehicles during this period. Despite its conceptual viability and alignment with Monteverdi’s luxury ethos, the 5-Door Safari was never advanced to serial production. Factors contributing to its limited development include the parallel production by Monteverdi of a four-door Range Rover conversion, a commercial venture that likely superseded internal investment in proprietary designs. Only one example of the 5-Door Safari is known to have been constructed. Following its functional life, the vehicle was placed on public display at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. It was later transferred to a private collection. The Monteverdi Safari 5-Door prototype remains an artifact of speculative design, illustrative of transitional ambitions within the European automotive landscape in the late 1970s, particularly in the domain of luxury utility vehicles.
