Monteverdi Safari

The Monteverdi Safari: The Swiss Luxury SUV.

Vehicle Overview

The Monteverdi Safari, introduced in 1976, was a luxury sport utility vehicle created by Swiss manufacturer Monteverdi as part of its effort to diversify beyond high-performance grand tourers. Developed during a time when the concept of a premium SUV was still emerging, the Safari was among the earliest vehicles to blend off-road capability with upmarket appointments. It was based on the rugged International Harvester Scout chassis and drivetrain, but extensively modified with new bodywork and interior enhancements, offering a more refined alternative to utilitarian off-roaders of the era. The exterior design of the Safari was characterized by its square proportions, upright stance, and clean surfaces. Although it retained some of the basic dimensions and elements of the Scout, the body was reworked by Carrozzeria Fissore, Monteverdi’s longtime styling partner. Details such as a bespoke front grille, integrated bumpers, and a more refined greenhouse differentiated it from its American counterpart. Various components were sourced from different European manufacturers—such as headlights from Fiat and taillights from Peugeot—creating a unique international composite in appearance. Under the hood, the Safari was available with a choice of powerful V8 engines. Depending on the version, it could be equipped with a 5.2-liter or 5.7-liter V8, or for top-tier models, a 7.2-liter Chrysler 440 engine. Power was delivered through a three-speed automatic transmission and a selectable four-wheel-drive system, giving the vehicle substantial off-road capability alongside smooth on-road performance. Inside, the Safari featured a level of comfort unusual for off-road vehicles at the time. Standard equipment included leather upholstery, air conditioning, electric windows, and wood trim. Optional extras extended to a refrigerator, television, and a range of bespoke fittings, placing the Safari in the luxury category. Though primarily offered as a two-door model, a four-door prototype was developed but never entered series production. The Monteverdi Safari remained in production until 1982. As an early attempt at a luxury SUV, it predates more mainstream offerings by decades, standing as a distinctive chapter in European automotive design and Swiss engineering ambition.
