O.S.C.A. MT4 Spider Monoposto Vignale
OSCA products were small, lightweight, reliable and expensive. The MT-4 was initially developed for both Formula 2 and sports car racing. After limited success, the Maserati brothers focused more on sports car racing using third party companies to design and build Barchetta-style bodies for the MT-4. The secret to the MT-4’s success was its exceptional power-to-weight ratio coupled with a robust drivetrain and reliable engineering. It is estimated that 72 MT-4’s were produced.
Vehicle Overview
This O.S.C.A. MT4 Spider Monoposto with a one-off body by Carrozzeria Vignale, was sold new to OSCA importer Edgar Fronteras in 1954. That same year, it was purchased by Phil Stewart who raced extensively in the Midwest, including 15 victories at Elkhart Lake, Wilmot, Milwaukee, Indy and others. During his ownership, he experienced engine trouble and replaced the original engine with a rare twin-plug 1491cc OSCA engine he purchased from Briggs Cunningham.
