Vehicle Overview
The OSCA MT4 Spider Monoposto, featuring a distinctive one-off body crafted by Carrozzeria Vignale, is a remarkable example of mid-20th century racing engineering. Sold new in 1954 to OSCA importer Edgar Fronteras, this car quickly made a name for itself in the competitive racing scene when it was purchased by Phil Stewart later that year. Stewart was a prolific racer in the Midwest, achieving an impressive 15 victories at notable tracks such as Elkhart Lake, Wilmot, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis. During his ownership, Stewart encountered engine issues that prompted him to replace the original powerplant with a rare twin-plug 1491cc OSCA engine sourced from the famous Briggs Cunningham. This engine upgrade allowed the MT4 to maintain its competitive edge on the circuit, showcasing the adaptability and performance that OSCA vehicles were known for. The OSCA MT4 was initially designed for both Formula 2 and sports car racing. However, after encountering limited success in the former, the Maserati brothers pivoted to focus on sports car racing, collaborating with third-party firms to create lightweight Barchetta-style bodies for the MT4. This strategic shift enhanced the car’s appeal and performance in the sports car category. The MT4’s success can be attributed to its exceptional power-to-weight ratio, a robust drivetrain, and meticulous engineering. With an estimated 72 units produced, the OSCA MT4 remains a celebrated piece of automotive history, prized for its combination of elegance and racing pedigree. Today, the MT4 Spider Monoposto is not only a testament to OSCA’s innovative spirit but also a highly sought-after collectible among racing enthusiasts and classic car aficionados alike.
