OM 665 Belvedere Touring

The OM 665 Belvedere Touring.

Vehicle Overview

The OM 665 Belvedere bodied by Carrozzeria Touring was a limited-production or one-off variant of the 665 S chassis produced by Officine Meccaniche in the late 1920s to early 1930s. The 665 model, also known by the designation “Superba,” was introduced in 1923 and produced into the early 1930s in various configurations, including both long-wheelbase (N) and short-wheelbase (S) versions. The model was equipped with a side-valve inline six-cylinder engine, initially of 2.0 litres and later enlarged to approximately 2.2 litres, with output ranging between 40 and 55 horsepower depending on specification. The Belvedere version attributed to Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was constructed on the shorter 665 S chassis. Touring, established in 1926, had by this period begun producing coachwork noted for restrained elegance and light construction, though it had not yet introduced the Superleggera system. The Belvedere body style, identified in contemporary materials, was configured as a cabriolet with extended greenhouse and panoramic rear visibility, characteristics consistent with the later Belvedere typology used by Touring in other applications. No verified chassis numbers are recorded for the Belvedere-bodied examples. A vehicle of this configuration appeared in period documentation associated with promotional exhibitions and private commissions, though no evidence has surfaced confirming serial production or standardization of the model. Surviving photographic material suggests aluminum-panel construction and a high standard of trim, implying either manufacturer-backed special orders or high-level private commissions. The 665 chassis was notable for its sporting accomplishments earlier in the decade, including a class win at the inaugural Mille Miglia in 1927. However, the Belvedere configuration was not intended for competitive use and differs markedly from the stripped-down Mille Miglia competition spiders also built on the 665 S chassis. Touring also produced other open-bodied versions of the 665 S around the same period, including sporting cabriolets possibly linked to pre-Mille Miglia or exhibition models, but no conclusive documentation connects them directly to the Belvedere variant. No confirmed examples of the OM 665 Belvedere by Touring are known to survive. The vehicle’s historical relevance lies in its representation of early interwar Italian coachbuilding practices and OM’s collaboration with prominent Milanese design firms.
