The Pegaso Z-102 Tibidabo (chassis nº 150.0118) holds a notable place in automotive history as the first Pegaso body designed by Federico Formenti and crafted by Carrozzeria Touring. Named after Tibidabo Mountain near Barcelona, this unique car made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1952. Its journey continued a year later when it traveled to the New York Fair, where it remained with Brewster Motors, the official Pegaso importer in the USA, and participated in several races. In 1957, ENASA, the parent company of Pegaso, repatriated the car to Spain, where it was sold in Madrid and subsequently vanished from public view until 1982. One of the distinguishing features of this early design is the “Pegaso lorry-look” grille, a design element shared only with its first Touring berlinetta sister. This feature was soon replaced by the iconic “cross” grille that became a signature of later Pegaso models. The Tibidabo also had a distinctive windshield design, with an upper contour that, according to Mr. Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni, humorously resembled the famous mustache of Salvador Dalí. This whimsical design choice was replaced the following month with a more conventional style. Despite its early disappearance, the Pegaso Z-102 Tibidabo resurfaced to reclaim its place in the spotlight. In 2023, it won its class at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a testament to its enduring appeal and historical significance. The Tibidabo’s history reflects the adventurous spirit of mid-20th-century automotive design and the creative collaborations that brought it to life. Its brief but eventful presence in the racing world and its unique design elements have cemented its status as a noteworthy example of automotive artistry and innovation.
