The Pininfarina Metrocubo: Length limited to the maximum, about 2.5 meters, but passenger compartment so large that it can accommodate five people if necessary. This is the summary of the “Metrocubo”, a hybrid city car that Pininfarina unveiled at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. For the engine, the choice has fallen on a “light” Lombardini, easily matched to the rear electric generators. Thanks to its twin-cylinder engine, which serves only to charge the batteries, the car has a theoretical range of 400 kilometers, a lot for a small town that hardly drives more than a hundred a day. Also out of the ordinary are the mobility qualities, not least because different diameter wheels can be fitted: smaller front ones to improve maneuverability at low speeds or in parking lots, and larger rear ones for greater grip. A breakthrough car, in short, for driving around town with five people or venturing out on suburban routes. Consuming little and polluting even less.
