The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Vignale one-off.

Vehicle Overview

The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Vignale was a Unique Fusion of Luxury and Eccentricity. Starting with a long-wheelbase Silver Wraith, Joseph Maschuch sought the expertise of the Italian futurists at Carrozzeria Vignale to craft a one-of-a-kind body for his special limousine. The result was a vehicle like no other, seamlessly blending classic Rolls-Royce elegance with futuristic Italian design by Giovanni Michelotti. The iconic Rolls-Royce grille was flanked by sealed beam P100 headlights, while smaller, hooded fog lights capped the front fenders. The rear of the car featured a swept-back window and C-pillar design, reminiscent of the 1959 Lincoln Continental Sedan, with a retractable rear window adding to its unique charm. Despite the long wheelbase, the car required an extended rear overhang to accommodate a full-sized trunk, ensuring it was as matchless in mid-1955 when delivered as it is today. Beyond its striking appearance, the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Vignale boasted an array of special features that drew attention. Under the bonnet, components including the block, head, dynamo, starter, air cleaner, carburetor, and inlet manifold were all painted green. The build sheets also specified that all visible pipes under the bonnet were to be chrome-plated, enhancing its visual appeal. Inside, the car was equipped with air conditioning to keep the cabin cool, while fine cabinetry in the rear compartment concealed a full bar and a center-mounted television. A Becker Mexico radio in the dashboard provided music to suit any occasion. Naturally, all the windows were power-operated, as was the front seat. The chauffeur’s compartment was trimmed in black leather, while Mr. Maschuch enjoyed the comfort of grey broadcloth. The most distinctive and unusual feature of the Silver Wraith Vignale was a toilet with a gold-painted seat located under the right rear passenger seat. Though it is believed to have been used primarily as a champagne cooler, the presence of this feature stemmed from an eccentric bet Maschuch made with friends. He declared he would relieve himself in the city plaza, leading him to commission this unique car. The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Vignale remains a testament to the imaginative spirit and luxurious extravagance of its time, making it a fascinating and unforgettable piece of automotive history.
