Celebrating the Art of Italian Coachbuilding

Salmson 2300 Berline

The Salmson 2300 Berline by Rocco Motto.

Vehicle Overview

The Salmson 2300 Berline Motto was a singular coachbuilt saloon constructed in 1956 by Carrozzeria Motto of Turin. It was based on the mechanical platform of the Salmson 2300 S, a model introduced by the French manufacturer in 1953 and produced until the cessation of Salmson’s automotive operations in 1957. The Motto-bodied example represented a unique application of Italian design principles to a French engineering base and remains one of the final coachbuilt efforts associated with the marque. The chassis employed for the Berline Motto was a long-wheelbase derivative of the standard Salmson 2300 S platform. The powertrain consisted of a front-mounted, four-cylinder engine of 2,328 cubic centimetres. The engine was of aluminium construction and employed twin overhead camshafts. It produced approximately 105 horsepower. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed Cotal electromagnetic gearbox. The suspension system featured independent front components and a live rear axle. Braking was by hydraulic drums on all four wheels. The aluminium body was designed and fabricated by Rocco Motto, a coachbuilder known for lightweight constructions and streamlined forms. The bodywork followed a two-box saloon configuration with integrated bumpers, a low roofline, and minimalist ornamentation. The twin headlamp design and subtle use of chrome trim distinguished it from production 2300 S models. The interior, though undocumented in surviving records, was intended to reflect a higher level of finish than the standard production saloon. Only one example of the Salmson 2300 Berline Motto was constructed. It was exhibited at the 1956 Paris Motor Show but did not enter series production. While Salmson produced approximately 234 examples of the 2300 S overall, only a small number received custom coachwork. Motto is recorded as having built three bodies on this chassis—this saloon and two additional variations. The specific chassis number of the Berline Motto has not been made public. No confirmed record of subsequent ownership or preservation has been established.
