Stanguellini 1100 Barchetta Sport

Vehicle Overview

The Stanguellini 1100 Barchetta Sport was a lightweight competition vehicle developed in the late 1940s by Automobili Stanguellini of Modena, Italy. Designed for the 1,100 cubic centimetres racing class, the model combined advanced engine design with a tubular steel chassis and coachbuilt bodywork, reflecting the specialist engineering practices of post-war Italian motorsport. The chassis consisted of a spaceframe structure produced by Gilco, employing small-diameter steel tubing arranged in a triangulated configuration to optimize rigidity and minimize weight. The bodywork was generally fabricated in aluminum by various Italian coachbuilders, including Zagato, resulting in distinctive, aerodynamic open two-seat designs characteristic of the era’s barchetta racing cars. Power was supplied by a modified Fiat-derived 1,089 cc inline four-cylinder engine. Stanguellini engineered a twin overhead camshaft (DOHC) aluminum cylinder head to improve breathing and performance. The engine delivered approximately 72 horsepower, enabling competitive speeds near 175 kilometres per hour. Power transmission was managed by a four-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels via a live axle. Suspension comprised independent front wishbones with coil springs and a live rear axle supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking was performed by drum brakes on all four wheels. The car’s total weight was approximately 650 kilograms, contributing to nimble handling and acceleration suited for endurance events and hill climbs. The 1100 Barchetta Sport was campaigned in numerous Italian competitions, including the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio, predominantly in the 1.1-litre class. Its lightweight construction and balanced chassis allowed it to perform competitively against higher-displacement rivals, often securing class victories and respectable overall placings. Production was limited, with fewer than twenty units constructed, many featuring custom coachwork. Specific chassis numbers and detailed ownership records are scarce due to the specialized nature of the manufacturer and the passage of time. Remaining examples are preserved in private collections and occasionally participate in historic racing and concours events. The Stanguellini 1100 Barchetta Sport remains an exemplar of Italian post-war racing car design, notable for its technical innovation, lightweight construction, and competition success within its displacement category.
