Vehicle Overview
The Volkswagen EA41 project of the Beetle, conceived by Pininfarina, has its roots in a meeting between Heinz Nordoff, the man behind Volkswagen’s success, and Gumpert, the representative of Autogerma, responsible for Volkswagen vehicles in Italy. Nordoff had an inexplicable desire to change something about the classic Beetle, so he tasked Gumpert with going to Turin to speak with Pininfarina and see what could be done to improve the iconic vehicle. Upon arriving in Turin, Gumpert presented Nordoff’s desires to Pininfarina, and the master designer, with his unique ability to grasp aesthetic nuances, examined the Beetle. After a brief inspection of the car, Pininfarina immediately identified the necessary intervention: widening the rear window and removing the central divider. His wisdom and intuition hit the mark, offering a simple yet effective solution to enhance the vehicle’s appearance without altering its original spirit. This was Pininfarina’s signature: a clear, concise, and respectful approach, which led to the birth of the Volkswagen EA41 project. Although the agreement between Nordoff and Pininfarina lasted only five years and did not yield concrete results, what mattered to Pininfarina was not so much the final outcome but rather the respect for the iconic Beetle, which he considered untouchable. If you look closer, it has many Lancia Aurelia B20 Coupé elements, especially in the rear end, despite it was based on a Beetle chassis and has a rear engine. It didn’t made it to a series production but it is a very interessting design study by Pininfarina. Other proposals were made by Vignale and Ghia. The story of this project reflects not only Pininfarina’s importance in the automotive industry but also his humility and respect for iconic design.
