Celebrating the Art of Italian Coachbuilding

Zündapp Coupé Pininfarina

The Zündapp Coupé Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Zundapp Coupé Pininfarina was a prototype motor vehicle constructed in 1956 as part of an exploratory collaboration between Zundapp-Werke GmbH of Nuremberg and Carrozzeria Pininfarina of Turin. Known internally under the designation KF IV, the vehicle was intended to serve as a high-performance grand touring car and marked Zundapp’s only foray into full-size automobile design. The project was initiated in response to declining motorcycle sales and the failure of the Janus microcar, prompting company leadership to consider diversification into the automotive sector. The prototype featured a two-door coupé body fabricated in aluminum alloy by Pininfarina. The form adhered to contemporary Italian design conventions, with a low roofline, fastback profile, and minimal ornamentation. The wheelbase measured approximately 2,300 millimetres, and the intended curb weight was targeted at 775 to 800 kilograms. The prototype delivered to Zundapp for evaluation weighed 450 kilograms in semi-complete form. The proposed mechanical configuration was a front-mounted Coventry Climax inline-four-cylinder engine of 1.1-litre displacement, producing an estimated 78 horsepower. The engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The chassis was equipped with independent suspension on all four wheels, incorporating coil springs and telescopic dampers. Braking was to be provided by hydraulic drum assemblies. A single running prototype was completed by Pininfarina and returned to Zundapp in late 1956. Dynamic testing commenced in 1957, though persistent mechanical and structural concerns were reported. The project incurred escalating costs, and no suitable in-house powertrain could be sourced or developed. In mid-1958, amid continuing financial pressure and a strategic reorientation toward core manufacturing competencies, the KF IV program was cancelled. No production tooling or further units were commissioned. The Zundapp Coupé Pininfarina remains extant as a one-off specimen. It constitutes a rare instance of design and engineering collaboration between a postwar German industrial firm and an established Italian coachbuilder. The vehicle occupies a peripheral yet notable place in the developmental history of both enterprises, reflecting the volatility and ambition of the European automotive sector during the 1950s.
