The Goldmanini Barchetta bodied by Motto Torino.

Vehicle Overview

The Goldmanini Barchetta, with its lines expertly crafted by Giovanni Michelotti and a lightweight aluminum body from Carrozzeria Motto of Turin was purpose-built for class G competition in SCCA races during the mid-1950s. This exceptional car, known as the Goldmanini, embarked on a journey that combined Italian design flair with American racing spirit. Constructed on a tubular Gilco chassis, the Motto workshop in 1954 fitted it with a body that would capture attention both on and off the track. The destination was the USA, where the car’s owner and accomplished SCCA racer, Max Goldman, undertook the final assembly. Under the hood, a highly tuned Fiat 1100 engine, courtesy of Paul Farago, powered this racing machine. In 1956, Max Goldman showcased the car at the Henry Ford Museum’s “Sports Cars in Review” show, marking its public debut. However, shortly afterward, the Goldmanini was taken off the road, partially disassembled, and laid dormant in storage for decades. Fast forward to 2011 when the car found a new home with its current owner, who brought it back to the UK. The restoration journey commenced at Thornley Kelham, where an authentic and comprehensive restoration unfolded. The Goldmanini presented a formidable challenge, arriving partially disassembled and requiring a meticulous restoration to achieve top concours standards. Historical photos became invaluable references, providing the level of detail needed to faithfully restore the car to its original specification. Every effort was made to replace parts with authenticity in mind, ensuring that the Goldmanini would not just be a restored relic but a rejuvenated racing marvel that encapsulates the fusion of Italian craftsmanship and American racing history. The restoration journey of the Goldmanini stands as a testament to the commitment of Thornley Kelham and the discerning vision of its owner.
