The Amectran EXAR-1: the 70’s electric sports car.
Vehicle Overview
The Amectran EXAR-1 is a prototype electric sports car developed in 1979 through a collaboration between American entrepreneur Edmond X. Ramirez, Sr. and renowned Italian designer Pietro Frua. Positioned as an early attempt to merge advanced electric propulsion with European automotive design, the EXAR-1 stands as a significant—though unrealized—milestone in the evolution of electric vehicles. The EXAR-1 was built on a concept originally created by Frua in 1975, which was based on the BMW 3.0Si platform. Frua re-acquired and reconfigured the vehicle to accommodate electric drive components before shipping it to the United States for technical development. The result was a sleek, low-profile coupe with proportions and styling reminiscent of high-performance European grand tourers of the era. Mechanically, the EXAR-1 employed a front-mounted electric motor driving the front wheels. Technical specifications reported a top speed of approximately 80 mph (129 km/h). The vehicle measured 198 inches (5,029 mm) in length, 69 inches (1,753 mm) in width, and 49.6 inches (1,260 mm) in height, with a curb weight of around 3,000 lbs (1,360 kg). Battery and drivetrain specifics were limited in detail, though contemporary sources emphasized the vehicle’s efficiency and projected performance. Promoted as the “world’s first production, electronic powered automobile,” the EXAR-1 was intended to enter series production. It received notable attention, including support from U.S. government officials, and was part of early discussions surrounding electric mobility in a post-oil crisis context. However, despite promotional efforts and media coverage, the car never advanced beyond the prototype stage. The Amectran EXAR-1 remains a historical example of early electric vehicle ambition. Its combination of Italian design and American innovation reflected the growing interest in alternative propulsion long before electric vehicles became mainstream. Although it did not achieve production, the EXAR-1 highlights the technical and conceptual experimentation that helped shape the future direction of the automotive industry.
