Chery LUI

The Chery LUI by Torino Design.

Vehicle Overview

The Chery LUI was a conceptual sport utility vehicle presented in 2006 as a result of a design collaboration between Chery Automobile Co. of China and the Italian studio Torino Design. Introduced at the Beijing Motor Show, the LUI was exhibited alongside a companion model named LEI, representing an aesthetic duality framed through gendered personification. These concepts were intended to illustrate Chery’s strategic ambitions toward design sophistication and to mark the inaugural output of the newly established Torino Design, founded by former Bertone designers Roberto Piatti and Giuliano Biasio. The LUI concept was designed as a compact urban SUV, with dimensions and proportions indicative of a vehicle positioned below the traditional mid-size segment. The exterior form was dominated by a pronounced beltline rising toward the A-pillar, generating a sense of linear motion. The front fascia featured stylized lighting elements integrated with large, geometric intakes, converging at a central emblem that served as the origin for a pair of sharp creases extending rearward along the bonnet. The sculptural surfaces were intended to communicate both mass and tension, aligning the design language with contemporary European styling trends of the mid-2000s. Innovative features included rear-facing cameras embedded within the wing mirrors and light projectors intended for adaptive illumination, although these were conceptual rather than operational. The rear design included an externally mounted spare wheel, a traditional SUV motif, reinforcing the vehicle’s nominal off-road identity. The LUI was presented without a completed interior, suggesting its primary function was as a static model for visual appraisal rather than a working prototype. The Chery LUI did not enter series production and remained confined to its role as a design study. It reflected Chery’s ongoing engagement with European design expertise during a formative period in its global strategy. Simultaneously, it served as an early demonstration of Torino Design’s capabilities, asserting the firm’s commitment to contemporary automotive aesthetics and signaling its entry into the international coachbuilding and design consultancy market. The LUI stands as a minor yet illustrative example of Sino-European collaboration in early 21st-century automotive concept development.
