Cowin C3

The Cowin C3 designed by Torino Design.

Vehicle Overview

The Cowin C3 is a subcompact sedan produced by Cowin Auto, a brand established as a spin-off from Chery Automobile. Introduced in 2014, the C3 was the brand’s first independently launched vehicle, aimed primarily at young consumers in China’s lower-tier cities. Its debut marked the beginning of Cowin Auto’s efforts to carve out a distinct identity within the Chinese automotive landscape. The C3 was first unveiled at the 2014 Chengdu Auto Show and entered production shortly thereafter. The project originally began under Chery with internal designations S31 for the hatchback and S32 for the sedan. Upon the formation of Cowin Auto as a separate entity, the project was reassigned. The car’s styling was handled by Italian designer Giuliano Biasio of Torino Design, reflecting Cowin’s intention to add international flair to its design language. Built on an updated version of Chery’s A1X platform, the Cowin C3 measures 4,250 mm in length, 1,726 mm in width, and 1,510 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,510 mm. The vehicle uses a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and was equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Transmission options included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic gearbox. The interior was relatively well-equipped for its class and price point, featuring a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, GPS navigation, and multimedia support. Other features included manual air conditioning, remote keyless entry, and central locking. Rear passenger space offered acceptable legroom, although headroom was limited due to the sloping roofline. In 2015, Cowin introduced the C3R, a five-door hatchback variant sharing the same platform and mechanical components. An electric version, the C3R EV, was launched in 2016, followed by a rebadged electric sedan variant under Chery’s nameplate, the eQ2, in 2018. Production of the Cowin C3 and its variants continued until 2020, after which the lineup was replaced by newer models. The C3 played a foundational role in establishing Cowin Auto’s presence in the market, helping define the brand’s focus on affordability, youthful styling, and urban practicality.
