The Ferrari 365GTB/4 NART Spider by Michelotti.
Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 365GTB/4 NART Spider, a remarkable example of automotive ingenuity, was a Daytona modified by the esteemed Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, commissioned by Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s importer in the USA. This specific car, the first of three NART Daytona Spyders, holds a fascinating story marked by its transformation and significance. The journey of this unique vehicle began in 1971 when it was delivered as a standard 365 GTB/4 Daytona to Dr. Silva through Chinetti’s showroom in Greenwich, Connecticut. Initially, the car was used sparingly before returning to Chinetti in 1975, likely for servicing. However, instead of simply maintaining the car, Luigi Chinetti decided to embark on a bold project. He sent this Daytona, along with two others, to Giovanni Michelotti’s workshops in Turin, Italy, to be transformed into the angular and distinctive Le Mans NART. Michelotti’s design for the NART Spyder was groundbreaking. The car featured sharp, angular lines and a unique aesthetic that set it apart from the standard Daytonas. This design not only showcased Michelotti’s ingenuity but also highlighted the collaborative spirit between Chinetti and the designer. The transformation resulted in a car that was not only visually striking but also performance-oriented, embodying the racing heritage of the North American Racing Team (NART). In 1977, this newly transformed Ferrari 365GTB/4 NART Spider was gifted to Marion, Luigi Chinetti’s beloved wife, adding a personal touch to its storied history. This gesture underscored the car’s significance within the Chinetti family. Three years later, in 1980, the car was exhibited at the Turin Auto Show by Michelotti, where it garnered attention for its unique design and racing pedigree. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 NART Spider stands as a testament to the visionary efforts of Luigi Chinetti and Giovanni Michelotti. It represents a perfect blend of American passion and Italian craftsmanship, making it a cherished piece of Ferrari’s storied legacy.
