The Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pavesi is a limited-production, coachbuilt variant of the Ferrari 550 Barchetta, modified by Carrozzeria Pavesi of Milan in the early 2000s. The vehicle was developed to address the original Barchetta’s minimalistic soft top, which was intended primarily for temporary use and lacked practicality for varied weather conditions or sustained high-speed driving. The Pavesi conversion introduced a fully functional electro-hydraulic folding soft top system, enhancing the car’s usability as an open-top grand tourer. The structural modifications involved reinforcement of the chassis and bodywork to accommodate the folding roof mechanism. The rear bonnet was redesigned to incorporate storage compartments for the roof when retracted, resulting in a reduction of the original luggage space. Internal alterations to the rear fenders were necessary to house components of the folding system. The front windscreen frame was largely retained, with the addition of hydraulic locks to secure the soft top in the closed position. The folding roof operation was designed to be completed in approximately 20 seconds, controlled via an electro-hydraulic system. An optional aluminum hardtop was also available from Pavesi, intended for further all-weather versatility. The conversion was available as a factory-authorized retrofit and reportedly commanded a price in the region of €45,000 for the soft top system, with the hardtop option adding approximately €25,000. The mechanical specification of the Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pavesi remained consistent with the donor vehicle. It retained the front-mounted, naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V12 engine producing 485 horsepower, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The vehicle’s performance and chassis dynamics were largely unaffected by the addition of the roof system, aside from the minor weight increase associated with structural reinforcements. Production numbers of the Pavesi conversion are estimated at approximately 15 units, all of which were completed on existing Ferrari 550 Barchetta chassis. The vehicles are considered rare and hold a distinct position within Ferrari’s lineage of limited and coachbuilt variants.
