Fiat 1100E Coupé Vignale

The Fiat 1100E Coupé Vignale designed by Giovanni Michelotti.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 1100E Coupé Vignale was built on the refined underpinnings of the Fiat 1100/103 chassis. Carrozzeria Vignale unveiled this captivating coupé at the 1953 Turin Auto Show. Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the Fiat 1100E Coupé Vignale represents a harmonious fusion of technical simplicity and coachbuilt artistry, capturing the spirit of post-war Italian automotive innovation. The car’s design is defined by its dramatic front-end treatment, as seen in the graceful front three-quarter profile. An elaborate vertical grille commands attention at the center, flanked by deeply inset headlamps nestled within sculpted recesses. This bold styling approach—distinctive and forward-looking—would later echo in Michelotti’s work on the Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale Coupé, showcasing his signature balance of elegance and assertiveness. Equally compelling is the coupé’s rear design, where sweeping lines and a delicately tapered roofline draw the eye to a gracefully rounded tail. The subtle rear fins, integrated taillights, and finely chromed bumpers reflect the attention to detail and proportion that defined Vignale’s coachwork during the golden age of Italian design. The uninterrupted beltline and the interplay between light and shadow across the body panels lend the car a sense of fluidity and poise in motion or at rest. Though based on Fiat’s humble 1100E mechanicals, this bespoke coupé radiated exclusivity. Only a handful were produced, making each example a rare artifact. One such model was acquired by Dr. Aldo Luino, Vignale’s Workshop doctor and owner of the famed Fiat 8V “Demon Rouge,” further underscoring the model’s desirability among connoisseurs.
