The Fiat 1100 Coupé Vistotal, conceptualized in 1948 by Carrozzeria Castagna on the Fiat 1100 chassis, stands as a testament to automotive innovation. Spearheaded by the creative genius of Ercole Castagna, this car introduced a revolutionary feature: the Vistotal patent for its windshield. This pioneering design element transformed the driving experience, offering an unobstructed panoramic view that immersed both drivers and passengers in their surroundings. However, the Fiat 1100 Coupé Vistotal’s historical significance is coupled with a design that sparked considerable debate. Influenced by baroque elements, the aesthetic didn’t universally appeal to automotive enthusiasts. Acknowledging the need for refinement and a broader appeal, Castagna wisely sought the collaboration of Giuseppe Seregni from Carrozzeria Touring for future projects. This partnership marked a turning point in the evolution of Castagna’s designs, as Seregni’s expertise brought a fresh perspective and refined touch to their creations. The Fiat 1100 Coupé Vistotal, despite its initial divisive reception, paved the way for a collaborative approach that blended innovation with aesthetic refinement, setting the stage for future iconic designs in the automotive industry.
At the end of 1937, at the Milan Motor Show, Carrozzeria Castagna had exhibited a Vistotal cabriolet which featured a windshield which was erected from the dashboard without any side posts. This revolutionary system born beyond the Alps was called “Vutotal”.
