Vehicle Overview
The Fiat 1100 Derby Bertone cabriolet is a notable example of Italian automotive design from the early 1950s. As Fiat’s original ‘1100’ family, which began with the 508C Balilla in 1937, evolved, it culminated in the new 1100-103 unitary construction model introduced in 1953. Among the highlights of this era was the 1100-103 convertible “Derby,” which debuted in 1954 with distinctive coachwork crafted by Carrozzeria Bertone. Designed by the celebrated Carrozzeria Bertone, the Fiat 1100 Derby cabriolet stands out for its stylish and elegant lines. It was unveiled at the 1953 Turin Auto Salon, where it captured attention with its sleek and sophisticated design. The model was showcased at several prestigious concours d’elegance, including those in San Remo and Rome in 1954, further cementing its reputation in the automotive world. The design of the Derby was heavily influenced by Count Mario Revelli de Beaumont, a prominent styling consultant who joined Carrozzeria Bertone after a notable career that included work with Stabilimenti Farina and Pinin Farina. Revelli de Beaumont was instrumental in bringing American styling cues to European design, a trend evident in the “transatlantic” lines and accents of the Fiat 1100 Derby. His influence is seen in the car’s elegant, streamlined form and its combination of American and Italian design elements. Under the leadership of Giovanni Bertone, who had retired in 1945, but had laid the groundwork for the company’s future successes, Carrozzeria Bertone crafted a vehicle that was both innovative and aesthetically pleasing. The 1100 Derby’s blend of American-inspired design with Italian craftsmanship represented a significant moment in automotive history, showcasing the intersection of international styling trends and local expertise. As one of the most successful models from Carrozzeria Bertone in the early 1950s, the Fiat 1100 Derby Cabriolet remains a celebrated example of mid-century automotive design, symbolizing the elegance and innovation of its era.
