The Fiat 1200 was interpreted by Vignale in the “Wonderful” coupé, clearly inspired by the fashion of the showy tail fins introduced that year by the cars of the Chrysler group: the roof was of the removable rigid type “Targa”. The 1957 Fiat 1200 Wonderful built by Vignale was first coupé of the post-war era to offer a removable roof panel (subsequently called a targa top), designed by Giovanni Michelotti. A Wonderful appeared in the 1966 movie “Les Combinards”.
Vehicle Overview
The Fiat 1200 Wonderful was built by Turin-based Vignale in extremely limited numbers, perhaps as few as two production examples plus the car exhibited at the 1957 Turin Motor Show. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it incorporates the first known post-war example of what would come to be known as the targa top; the car’s removable roof panel is designed to be securely strapped down and stowed away in the car’s trunk to provide an open-air driving experience.
