Fiat 850 Berlina Vignale

The Fiat 850 Berlina Vignale: the Vignalina.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 850 Berlina Vignale, designed by Virginio Vairo who replaced Giovanni Michelotti at Carrozzeria Vignale, succeeded the earlier model based on the 600 D mechanics, known as “Vignalina.” It was available in three body styles: a 2-door sedan, a coupé, and a spider, all sharing the standard 850 wheelbase. Various versions of the Berlina were produced over its lifespan, each with distinct features and specifications.

The First series was built from 1964 to 1966. It was equipped with the engine from the Fiat 850 Berlina Super, type 100 G002, with a displacement of 843cc and producing 37hp. This version featured 12-inch solid wheels, crossed windshield wipers, chrome profiles on the top of the front fenders, a double chrome profile on the side skirts, and engine ventilation grilles on the rear panel.

The Second Series, produced in 1967, also used the 843cc, 37hp engine from the Fiat 850 Berlina Super. It maintained the 12-inch solid wheels and crossed windshield wipers but had its engine ventilation grilles moved to the rear hood instead of the rear panel. This series featured a large chrome profile on the side skirts, removed the chrome profiles on the top of the front fenders, and added chrome profiles on the wheel arches.

In 1968, the Third Series was introduced, featuring the Fiat 850 Berlina Special’s engine, type 100 GB 000, with the same 843cc displacement but producing 47hp. This series upgraded to front disc brakes and 13-inch perforated wheels. The windshield wiper position, steering wheel, and instrument panel were from the 850 Berlina Special, including a 160 km/h speedometer. Additionally, the font of the logo on the rear panel was modified.

The Fourth Series of 1969 introduced dual front headlights with smaller inner lights.

The “Lusso Export” version included luxury features such as metallic paint, electric windows, a cigarette lighter, a Ferrara wooden steering wheel, an electronic tachometer, coordinated carpets, and chrome gear shift and handbrake levers.

A prototype known as the  Giannini 950 featured a 930cc engine producing 54hp. It had a dashboard tachometer, a specific camshaft, and a lightweight alloy oil pan.
