Fiat 600 Savana

The Fiat 600 Savana by Carrozzeria Savio.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat Savana, more commonly referred to as the Fiat Jungla by Carrozzeria Savio, was a limited-production, open-body utility vehicle built between 1965 and 1974. It was developed by Carrozzeria Savio of Turin using the mechanical basis of the Fiat 600 D. The model was conceived as a light recreational and service vehicle with both civilian and institutional applications. Its design reflected a utilitarian approach, oriented toward minimal weight, structural simplicity, and ease of maintenance. The chassis and running gear were derived directly from the Fiat 600 D. The engine was a rear-mounted inline four-cylinder unit, water-cooled, with a displacement of 633 cubic centimetres. The engine employed an overhead valve configuration and was paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Power output was approximately 32 horsepower at 4,800 revolutions per minute. The vehicle featured independent front suspension with a transverse leaf spring and a rear swing axle supported by semi-trailing arms and a transverse leaf spring. Braking was managed through hydraulically operated drum brakes on all four wheels. The bodywork was open in layout, with simple flat panels and minimal external ornamentation. Constructed in aluminium or steel, depending on production batch, the Savana featured a fold-down windshield, removable canvas doors, and a lightweight canvas or detachable hard top. Early examples had exposed framework and were intended for limited-weather use, while later units offered slightly improved weather protection and structural refinement. The model was adapted for both leisure and paramilitary use, including deployment by the Italian Forestry Corps, Carabinieri, and other civil agencies. Production of the Fiat Savana (Jungla) reached approximately 3,200 units over the course of nearly a decade. Variants were produced using mechanical components from the Fiat 600 D, Fiat 600 R, SEAT 600, and Zastava 750, particularly for export or licensed assembly. Chassis identification followed the standard numbering conventions of the Fiat 600 series. No official registry was maintained for individual units. The Fiat Savana by Savio represents a period of experimentation in coachbuilt utility vehicles based on compact city car platforms. It reflects a transitional phase in Italian vehicle design, where adaptability and practical construction were prioritised over formal styling.
