The Maserati 200S Tipo 52.

Vehicle Overview

The Maserati 200S, internally designated as Tipo 52, is a mid-1950s sports racing car developed by the Italian manufacturer Maserati as a successor to the A6GCS. Introduced in 1955, the 200S was conceived to compete in the 2-liter sports car category, directly challenging contemporaries such as the Ferrari 500 Mondial. A total of 28 examples were produced between 1955 and 1957, with the majority featuring coachwork by Carrozzeria Fantuzzi. The 200S was powered by a 1,994.3 cc (2.0 L) inline-four light-alloy engine, featuring dual overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers. Early models were equipped with twin Weber 50DCO3 carburetors, later replaced by 45DCO3 units. The engine produced approximately 190 PS (187 hp) at 7,500 rpm. The chassis utilized a tubular frame, with front suspension comprising double wishbones and coil springs, while the rear initially featured a live axle, later upgraded to a De Dion setup in response to handling critiques. The initial five 200S bodies were constructed by Celestino Fiandri, with the subsequent 23 examples bodied by Medardo Fantuzzi’s Carrozzeria Fantuzzi. Fantuzzi’s designs were characterized by their aerodynamic efficiency and aesthetic appeal, featuring sweeping fender lines, a protruding small-mouth grille, and a trailing head fairing. The 200S made its competitive debut at the 1955 Imola Grand Prix. Throughout its racing career, the 200S achieved notable successes, including a victory at the 1956 Gran Premio di Roma by Jean Behra and a second-place finish at the 1956 Supercortemaggiore in Monza, driven by Stirling Moss and Cesare Perdisa. In 1957, to comply with new FIA Appendix C regulations, Maserati introduced the 200SI (Sport Internazionale) variant. Modifications included a full-width windscreen, two functioning doors, and provisions for a spare wheel and a rudimentary fabric top. These changes allowed the 200SI to participate in international sports car competitions. The Maserati 200S, particularly those bodied by Fantuzzi, is regarded as a significant model in Maserati’s racing history. Its combination of engineering prowess and distinctive design has made it a sought-after collector’s item, with examples participating in prestigious vintage racing events and auctions.
