The Matra Laser, born out of Giovanni Michelotti’s creative vision following his involvement in restyling the Matra 530, emerges as a sleek coupe that captures the essence of its era. Despite not being directly linked to the development of the future Bagheera model, Michelotti’s design foreshadows elements of upcoming models, demonstrating his forward-thinking approach. In contrast to its predecessor, the Matra Laser adopts a strict two-seater configuration, streamlining its design and emphasizing sportiness. While retaining the essential components, such as the Ford V4 engine, the Laser distinguishes itself with its sharp, almost flat lines, marking a departure from conventional design norms. Yet, amidst its contemporary aesthetic, the Laser exudes a distinct personality, setting it apart from its counterparts. A striking feature of the Laser is its massive wheel arches, not merely decorative but integral to the car’s structural integrity and aerodynamics. Functionality meets design as these arches also serve to direct airflow towards the engine bay, aiding in cooling—a testament to Michelotti’s meticulous attention to detail.
