Peugeot 403 Pininfarina

The Peugeot 403 designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Peugeot 403 is a mid-range vehicle produced by the French automaker Peugeot from 1955 to 1967. This model holds a significant place in automotive history as it was the first Peugeot to surpass one million units sold. Additionally, it was the first mass-produced French car to feature a diesel engine, marking a notable shift in the industry. The 403 was also the first Peugeot designed by the renowned Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, setting a new standard for style and elegance in the brand’s lineup. The project to develop the 403 began in 1950, driven by Peugeot’s desire to diversify its offerings. Since 1948, the company had relied solely on the 203 model. As other manufacturers began to explore three-volume sedan designs with integrated fenders—such as the recently launched Alfa Romeo 1900—Peugeot recognized the need for a new model that could compete in this emerging market. The 403 was envisioned as a more elegant vehicle with improved passenger space while sharing much of its mechanical foundation with the 203. The trunk capacity was also increased to enhance practicality, essential for a family car. To realize this vision, Peugeot turned to Pininfarina, one of Europe’s most prestigious coachbuilders at the time. By late 1954, automotive publications captured images of the nearly finalized prototypes during road tests, creating anticipation among car enthusiasts. Production took place at the Sochaux plant, which had previously been used for the 203. The facility was expanded to accommodate new production lines, including the acquisition of an additional 30,000 square meters of land—18,000 for body production, 10,000 for painting and interior fittings, and 2,000 for manufacturing specific components. The official unveiling of the Peugeot 403 occurred on April 20, 1955, at the Trocadéro in Paris. The 403 marked a crucial milestone for Peugeot, being the first model intended for large-scale export, expanding the brand’s reach beyond France and solidifying its place in the global automotive market. The Peugeot 403’s blend of style, practicality, and innovation continues to be celebrated as a significant chapter in the history of the brand.
