The Partnership between Peugeot & Pininfarina

The Peugeot 406 Coupé is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coupes of the nineties and one of the most beautiful Peugeots ever. It brings back the concept of the medium-high range coupé, left aside since 1983, the year in which the 504 was retired.
The Peugeot 406 Coupé is the only 406 not produced at a Peugeot plant, as assembly took place in the Pininfarina plants in Grugliasco (bodywork and painting) and San Giorgio Canavese (bodywork). The Peugeot 406 Coupé offers a completely different body from that of the sedan: here we do not notice great similarities with the other two variants in the range. The car’s design is attributed to a young designer from the Pininfarina staff: Davide Arcangeli. Looking at the car from certain angles, one gets the impression that the Grugliasco designers have drawn in part from the fascinating lines of certain Ferraris they already designed a few years earlier, one above all the 456 designed by Pietro Camardella. These skilful stylistic touches, which only a prestigious signature such as Pininfarina, gave an intrinsic grit to the car body, a grit that amazed even more when one considers the clean lines, not weighed down by tacky aerodynamic appendages. Characteristic of the Peugeot 406 Coupé was the pointed front with thin headlights and barely hinted grille, corresponding in practice to the stop of the engine hood. The side panel is extremely clean, showing the accentuated inclination of the front and rear pillars. I specify the design of the 16-inch 6-spoke alloy wheels. The receding tail with characteristic rhomboid optical groups is also particular.
