Seat Toledo
The Seat Toledo second-series, launched in 1998, was based on the same platform as the VW Golf IV, Audi A3 and Škoda Octavia. The body became a 4-door sedan, losing the tailgate, but a 5-door hatchback model without a tailgate was derived from the Toledo: the León, with which Seat inserted itself among the classic C-segment midsize cars. Seat had basically followed the pattern that parent company Volkswagen used for the Golf and Bora models, or FIAT for the Bravo/Brava/Marea models: cars derived from the same platforms and sharing most of the body and cabin components.
Vehicle Overview
The Seat Toledo, designed by Italdesign Giugiaro, incorporated technologies (turbocharged engines, 150-hp TDI, all-wheel drive, 5-cylinder engines) that helped set it apart from the Škoda Octavia and C-segment cars in general. Therefore, the definition of a car straddling two segments could be dropped, while it could be talked about as being in the “Premium” C subsegment, where it sought to offer technology and equipment at lower prices than in the D segment, with rivals such as the Volkswagen Bora, Volvo S40 and Rover 400. In northern Europe, however, the previous definition remained. Because of greater industrial integration, the car was produced in Belgium along with the Golf, but once the León went into production, Spain regained assembly of a model.
