The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Spider 412.004 Pininfarina, designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont for Count Salvi del Pero, debuted in the spring of 1939, just before World War II. This exceptional car was based on the Alfa Romeo 2900B chassis, renowned for its powerful 8-cylinder supercharged engine, making it one of the most sophisticated and potent cars of its time. At the 1939 Turin Concours d’Elegance, the Alfa Romeo 8C 412.004 won its category, showcasing its elegant and innovative design. Later, it underwent a transformation into a berlinetta sport configuration. The design by Mario Revelli di Beaumont for Pinin Farina featured several groundbreaking elements. The fenders were integrated into the body shell, and the profile of the bonnet and grille echoed the iconic Alfetta 158 Grand Prix car. Notably, the headlights were fully retractable, a feature that enhanced aerodynamics and aesthetics. The recessed door handles with push-button opening added to the car’s streamlined look. From a structural standpoint, the 8C 2900B Spider introduced a wholly metal framework, a significant innovation by Pinin Farina aimed at improving torsional rigidity, particularly crucial for open-top cars. Unfortunately, the outbreak of World War II interrupted further development and production of such luxurious and technologically advanced vehicles. It would be nearly seven years before automotive innovation could resume amidst the post-war reconstruction and recovery efforts.
