Alfa Romeo Vittoria
Castagna, historic coachbuilder from the 1920’s and 1930’s producing famous bodies for Alfa Romeo and Lancias amongst others, was revived in 1995 by Italian businessman Umberto Petra. The debute models was this Alfa SZ based prototype, designed by Gioacchino Acampora, named the “Vittoria” after Petra’s eldest daughter.
Vehicle Overview
The Alfa Romeo Vittoria emerged as a distinctive creation, rooted in the limited edition SZ Alfa Romeo sports car and ultimately tracing its lineage back to the Alfa Romeo 75 3.0 V6. Crafted as a prototype by Gioacchino Acampora, the car bore the moniker “Vittoria” in honor of Petra’s eldest daughter. This marked the inaugural model of the refounded Carrozzeria Castagna. The Milan based coachbuilder proudly asserted that their modified 3.0 V6 engine was capable of generating an impressive 320 bhp at 7,000 rpm, a substantial leap from the standard car’s 180 bhp. Remarkably, this power boost was achieved while retaining the original single camshaft per head setup. The Alfa Romeo’s performance was further enhanced through upgrades to the front wishbone and rear de Dion suspension, incorporating stiffer springs, dampers, nylon and rose jointed bushes, and revised geometry. The braking system received a significant overhaul, featuring Brembo 6-pot calipers, cross-drilled and vented discs. The prototype rolled on distinctive 18-inch magnesium alloy wheels, elevating both its aesthetics and performance. The styling, characterized as controversial and bold, showcased Carrozzeria Castagna’s penchant for pushing boundaries. The grand reveal of the Castagna Vittoria took place at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show, where its avant-garde design and enhanced performance captivated onlookers. Despite the initial acclaim, the passage of time saw the Vittoria relegated to obscurity, tucked away in the environs of Milan, accumulating dust and sustaining minor damages. Nevertheless, this unique piece of automotive history, with its lineage rooted in Alfa Romeo excellence, remains an intriguing chapter in the evolution of bespoke coachbuilding.
