Vehicle Overview
The Besturn B70, launched in 2006, marked a significant step in the evolution of China’s domestic automotive industry. Produced by First Automotive Works (FAW)—the country’s oldest and most prominent automaker—the B70 was designed to elevate the brand’s profile with a stylish, modern mid-size sedan aimed squarely at China’s growing middle class. At the heart of the B70’s success was its solid foundation. Developed on the Ford CD3 platform, the same architecture used for the Mazda 6, the B70 benefitted from tried-and-true engineering, offering a balance of driving dynamics, structural rigidity, and comfort. FAW smartly paired this international mechanical pedigree with Italian design flair, commissioning Fabrizio Giugiaro of Italdesign to shape the car’s exterior. The result was a clean and elegant sedan with strong proportions and refined surface treatment. The B70 featured a long wheelbase, a wide stance, and simple, dynamic lines that gave it a presence well beyond its price point. Giugiaro’s hallmark sense of proportion is evident in the crisp contours and flowing silhouette, lending the B70 an understated sophistication that appealed to business professionals and family buyers alike. Inside, the B70 offered a spacious and well-appointed cabin, with soft-touch materials, ample legroom, and intuitive ergonomics. While luxury levels varied by trim, even base models emphasized comfort and refinement—attributes that helped position the B70 as a reliable, everyday executive car. Power came from a range of combustion engines, paired with manual or automatic transmissions, offering a smooth, composed ride ideal for China’s growing urban roads. Produced until 2014, the first-generation Besturn B70 played a key role in FAW’s modern identity. It proved that a Chinese brand could create a desirable, globally competent sedan with international design influence and solid engineering. Stylish, well-built, and aspirational, the B70 was a bold step forward for China’s automotive ambitions.
