Celebrating the Art of Italian Coachbuilding

BMW 3.0 Si Frua

The BMW 3.0 Si by Pietro Frua.

Vehicle Overview

The BMW 3.0 Si Frua is a one-off concept car designed and constructed in 1975 by the Italian coachbuilder Pietro Frua, based on the BMW E3 3.0 Si sedan. This prototype represents a unique exercise in cross-cultural automotive design, combining German mechanical engineering with Italian custom bodywork. Commissioned independently by Frua, the vehicle was reimagined as a two-door fastback coupé. The original four-door body of the 3.0 Si was extensively modified to accommodate a sleeker profile. Notable exterior features include a reinterpreted front fascia incorporating BMW’s signature twin-kidney grille in a narrower configuration, flush-mounted headlamps, and a sharply sloped rear glass leading into a short deck. The design emphasized both aerodynamic flow and stylistic elegance. The 3.0 Si Frua retained the mechanical configuration of the standard BMW E3 sedan. It was powered by the 3.0-litre M30 inline-six engine, equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, delivering approximately 200 horsepower. The vehicle employed a manual transmission and independent suspension, offering performance in line with the donor chassis. The Frua-bodied BMW was displayed at several international motor shows over a span of three years. It made its public debut at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, followed by appearances at the 1976 Geneva Motor Show, the 1976 Turin Motor Show, and again at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. Despite positive reception and the unique nature of the design, the vehicle remained a one-off and did not progress to production. Elements of the 3.0 Si Frua’s styling would later reappear in Frua’s design for the Amectran Exar-1, a prototype electric vehicle presented in 1979. The BMW 3.0 Si Frua remains notable as an example of mid-1970s concept design and as a rare instance of independent coachbuilding applied to a contemporary BMW platform. Its presence at multiple European auto salons highlights its significance as a design study and an experimental expression of grand touring aesthetics.
