Brilliance FRV/BS2

The Brilliance FRV/BS2 designed by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

Launched in 2008, the Brilliance FRV, also known as the BS2, is a compact hatchback sedan designed to blend sporty character with everyday family usability. A product of China’s rapidly advancing automotive landscape, the FRV was conceived as an all-domestic vehicle—but with international ambitions. The car marks a continuation of the long-standing collaboration between Brilliance Auto and Italdesign, which began in 1997 with the Zhonghua. For the FRV, Fabrizio Giugiaro oversaw both the exterior styling and the interior design, resulting in a coherent and forward-thinking package. Giugiaro’s influence is clear from first glance. The FRV features assertive, athletic lines—a prominent front grille, sharply defined headlights, and a coupe-inspired roofline—all contributing to its dynamic silhouette. While sporty in stance, the FRV retains the versatility of a five-door layout, offering easy access for rear passengers and ample cargo space, making it a genuinely family-friendly vehicle wrapped in a youthful, energetic design. Presented to European audiences at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the FRV sought to signal that Chinese manufacturers were no longer content to remain regional players. The car was designed to appeal to a global market, with a refined look and an interior that offered surprising levels of comfort and quality for its class. Giugiaro gave the cabin a clean, functional layout with attention to driver ergonomics and rear-seat practicality—prioritizing both aesthetics and usability. Powered by traditional combustion engines, the FRV was offered with a range of efficient petrol powertrains, paired with manual or automatic gearboxes. While not intended to be a performance car, the FRV delivered light, responsive handling, making it equally suited to city commutes or countryside detours. A symbol of Brilliance’s design maturity, the FRV showed that sporty styling and everyday functionality need not be mutually exclusive. With Giugiaro’s pen guiding its form, the FRV stood as a confident step into a more design-conscious era of Chinese motoring.
