Daihatsu Move

The Daihatsu Move second series by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

Launched in 1998, the second-generation Daihatsu Move brought a refreshing blend of Japanese urban practicality and Italian design sophistication. Conceived by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign, this version of the Move represented a leap forward for the kei car segment—a uniquely Japanese category of ultra-compact, city-focused vehicles. While kei cars often prioritize function over form, Giugiaro’s involvement ensured that the Move didn’t just meet regulations—it made a statement. Built for maximum utility within Japan’s strict size and engine displacement limits, the Move II kept its tall, narrow profile but refined it with smoother lines, better aerodynamics, and a more cohesive visual identity. Giugiaro reinterpreted the car’s boxy silhouette with subtle curves, sleek headlights, and a cleaner rear treatment, lending the vehicle a touch of European modernity while maintaining kei car sensibilities. The result was a car that stood out in a sea of square microvans, offering an unexpectedly stylish presence for such a modest footprint. Under the skin, the second-gen Move came with a range of three-cylinder engines under 660cc, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission, and was available in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. Despite its small size, the Move’s upright design maximized interior space, creating a surprisingly roomy and flexible cabin. Rear seats folded flat to expand cargo capacity, and the high roofline allowed for excellent headroom—ideal for daily urban duties. The second-generation Move helped reinforce Daihatsu’s reputation for smart, space-efficient vehicles. Giugiaro’s touch added a layer of sophistication that elevated it above typical commuter cars in its class. Though compact in size, the Move proved that intelligent design could turn even the most utilitarian vehicle into a piece of everyday automotive art—a true meeting of Japanese function and Italian form.
