The Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti, chassis 0402 AM, embarked on a remarkable journey, beginning its life as a Pinin Farina Spyder under the ownership of the esteemed Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini. Despite Rossellini’s passion for racing, his wife, the iconic Ingrid Bergman, harbored reservations about his ventures on the track, famously putting a halt to his participation in the 1953 Mille Miglia. In 1954, Rossellini acquired two 375 MMs, one for himself and a special Berlinetta for Bergman. However, following an unsuccessful race at Karlskoga Kanonloppet, where Rossellini failed to finish, he acquiesced to Bergman’s wishes and bid farewell to his racing pursuits. Over the years, the car underwent significant transformations, including a crash that necessitated its rebodiment as a Berlinetta in 1955 by the skilled hands of Scaglietti. Despite its undeniable beauty, Bergman couldn’t shake her apprehension, describing the car as akin to a monster. In 1964, Rossellini parted ways with the Ferrari, selling it to Mario Savona. Unfortunately, the car fell victim to theft and underwent a crude repaint in green before Savona reclaimed it. Eventually, Savona passed it on to Charles Robert, igniting a meticulous restoration journey that spanned more than two decades. In 1995, the Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti found itself in the esteemed collection of former Microsoft executive Jon Shirley, marking the culmination of a remarkable odyssey through the hands of various owners and restoration efforts. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring allure and timeless elegance of Ferrari’s storied history, a symbol of passion, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of automotive excellence.
