Vehicle Overview

The Stanguellini 750 Sport Scaglietti is a singular artifact of postwar Italian motor racing, constructed in 1954 through the convergence of two Modenese institutions: Automobili Stanguellini and Carrozzeria Scaglietti. Created as a one-off competition barchetta, the vehicle represents a brief but expressive collaboration between an established racing engine builder and a coachbuilder known for its early aerodynamic experiments prior to formal association with Ferrari. The chassis, designated CS04080, was based on a tubular frame derived from Fiat components, modified extensively by Stanguellini to accommodate a bespoke power unit. The engine was a 741 cc inline-four cylinder, equipped with twin overhead camshafts and fed by twin Weber carburetors. Output was approximately 60 horsepower at 7,500 rpm—competitive within the displacement class. A four-speed gearbox and live rear axle completed the drivetrain. Weight was minimized through the extensive use of hand-formed aluminum, resulting in a total mass suitable for class racing on both closed circuits and road events. The bodywork, executed by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in aluminum, was characterized by fluent, unbroken lines, enclosed front fenders, and a gently tapered tail. The front fascia was defined by a low-set grille and recessed headlamps beneath clear covers, enhancing aerodynamic penetration. The windscreen was minimal, in accordance with contemporary barchetta conventions. The visual balance of the car, neither ostentatious nor overly utilitarian, suggests a strong sense of proportion and material restraint. Chassis CS04080 competed in the 750 cc class of Italian national sports car events, including appearances at the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. Period records confirm its eligibility and participation, though detailed results remain fragmentary. Following its active career, the car entered private ownership, passing through several collections in Italy and later abroad. It remained largely unrestored until its rediscovery and mechanical refurbishment in the late 20th century. The Stanguellini 750 Sport Scaglietti occupies a discreet yet significant place in the postwar history of Italian competition automobiles. As a sole collaboration between its namesake firms, it embodies the craftsmanship and experimental ethos of its region, while remaining a rare instance of independent coachbuilding applied to a sub-1-liter racing chassis.
