The Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti stands as one of the most potent and evocative expressions of mid-century sports car engineering. Developed in 1955 under the direction of Enzo Ferrari and designed by Sergio Scaglietti, the 410 Sport was conceived with the express purpose of conquering the Carrera Panamericana. Though that race was ultimately cancelled, the model nonetheless became a formidable competitor in international motorsport, noted for its power, speed, and endurance.

The vehicle was powered by a 5.0-liter Lampredi V12 engine, derived from Ferrari’s Grand Prix experience, delivering approximately 340 to 380 horsepower depending on ignition configuration. This engine, designated type 126, featured twin magnetos and a dry-sump lubrication system. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission—unusual for the time—it endowed the 410 Sport with exceptional performance for endurance racing, capable of reaching speeds upwards of 280 kilometers per hour. The chassis, designated tipo 519C, utilized a tubular steel space frame, with a wheelbase measuring 2,420 mm. Suspension was independent at the front with unequal-length wishbones and coil springs, while the rear employed a De Dion axle with transverse leaf spring and Houdaille shock absorbers. Braking was managed by finned drum brakes at all four corners.

Only four examples of the 410 Sport were constructed. Chassis number 0592CM was the prototype and development car. Chassis 0594CM, a coupe, was bodied by Scaglietti but is often viewed separately due to its closed design. The remaining two examples—0596CM and 0598CM—were delivered as open Spiders and raced extensively, particularly in North and South America. Chassis 0598CM is perhaps the most storied, driven in period by Carroll Shelby, who scored multiple victories with it in the United States during 1956 and 1957. It later passed through several notable collections, including those of John Edgar and Oscar Davis.

Chassis 0596CM was also entered in numerous events, piloted by distinguished drivers including Juan Manuel Fangio and Eugenio Castellotti during its early campaigns. Though mechanical attrition often hampered results, the car demonstrated remarkable pace and reliability in favorable conditions.

Each car’s bodywork was executed by Scaglietti in hand-formed aluminum, reflecting both aesthetic restraint and functional purpose. The design prioritized aerodynamics and cooling, with a long, low nose, integrated air intakes, and a scalloped rear section.

The Ferrari 410 Sport represents a singular moment in the brand’s history—a fusion of technological ambition, artisanal construction, and racing intent. It remains one of the most formidable and desirable sports racing cars of its era, a machine built not only to compete, but to endure at the highest level of motor sport.
