The Ferrari 500 TRC Spider by Scaglietti.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 500 TRC Spider, constructed in 1957 by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, represents the final evolution of Ferrari’s four-cylinder sports racing cars. It was designed specifically to comply with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s Appendix C regulations, which imposed new standards for sports car design, including a full-width windscreen, provision for a passenger door, and accommodation for a convertible top. These mandates influenced both the dimensions and aesthetic characteristics of the vehicle, resulting in a broader cockpit and more refined contours than its predecessor, the 500 TR. At the mechanical core of the 500 TRC lies the Tipo 131 engine, a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four. Equipped with dual overhead camshafts and twin ignition, this powerplant produced approximately 180 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute. It was paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The vehicle’s chassis, derived from the 860 Monza, consisted of a tubular steel frame. Front suspension utilized an independent setup with double wishbones and coil springs, while the rear employed a live axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs and hydraulic drum brakes on all four corners. The aluminum bodywork, executed by Scaglietti, embodied aerodynamic efficiency and aesthetic elegance, marked by its long bonnet, sculpted fenders, and tapering tail section. With a dry weight of approximately 680 kilograms, the 500 TRC could achieve speeds approaching 245 kilometers per hour. The balance of power, weight, and agility rendered it particularly effective in endurance and sports car competition. Although not fielded directly by the Ferrari factory, the 500 TRC achieved notable success in privateer hands. In 1957, a privately entered example secured a class win and finished seventh overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the United States, it enjoyed continued success in SCCA racing, where Gaston Andrey secured national championships in 1958 and 1959. Only seventeen examples were constructed, underscoring its rarity. As the terminal development of Ferrari’s four-cylinder competition cars, the 500 TRC Spider occupies a significant position within the historical trajectory of the marque. Its combination of regulatory compliance, mechanical simplicity, and competitive ability marks it as a definitive expression of mid-century sports car engineering.
