Fiat 500 B Giardiniera Carrozzerie Speciali

The Fiat 500 B Belvedere.

Vehicle Overview

In the spring of 1948, the “500 B” was introduced, bearing a close resemblance to its predecessor but featuring substantial technical modifications. The engine had a new cast-iron head with overhead valves operated by pushrods and rockers, increasing its power to 16.5 horsepower (12.1 kW). This allowed for a top speed of 95 km/h and reduced fuel consumption. The chassis was also significantly revised with many small improvements, including the adoption of a rear transverse stabilizer bar and hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers on all four wheels. Winter comfort was enhanced by the addition of a heating system, available upon request. The most important and well-received innovation was the introduction of the “Giardiniera” version, called Belvedere. This variant offered a small family car with four seats and a rear tailgate, providing access to a considerable cargo area that could be further expanded by folding forward the rear seatback. The new version reproduced in a smaller format the ingenious “functional body” solution devised in 1946 by Mario Revelli for Carrozzeria Viotti. It featured luxurious sides made of ash wood and masonite, styled after American woodies, and could be embellished with metallic paints. The “Giardiniera” was the world’s first mass-produced station wagon. The original term “Giardinetta” could not be used as it was trademarked by Carrozzeria Viotti, so the name “Giardiniera” was chosen instead. This not only had a phonetic similarity to Viotti’s model but also echoed the name of the carts used by vegetable growers to transport their produce to markets in the post-war era. The “500 B” remained in production for just over a year, with more than 21,000 units built.
