Lancia Gamma Spider
The Lancia Gamma Spider by Pininfarina.
Vehicle Overview
The Lancia Gamma Spider prototype, developed by Pininfarina, was part of a series of special Gamma prototypes that included the Scala (a sedan version) and the Olgiata (a Shooting Brake). The Gamma Spider shared design similarities with the Beta Spider, featuring a removable roof panel and rear window, leaving a roll-bar over the rear seats akin to a Targa Roof. While the Spider made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1978, it never entered production. However, its most notable moment came when it was utilized by Pope John Paul II during his tour of Northern Italy in the early 1980s. Interestingly, at least one Coupe model has been modified to mimic the Spider’s configuration, albeit not by Pininfarina. It’s worth noting that all Lancia Gamma prototypes were painted in a striking gold hue. The Lancia Gamma Spider prototype encapsulated Pininfarina’s innovative approach to automotive design, pushing boundaries with its convertible concept. The inclusion of a removable roof panel and rear window allowed for an open-air driving experience while still providing structural integrity with the roll-bar over the rear seats. Despite its promising design and the honor of being used by Pope John Paul II, the Gamma Spider never made it to production. However, its brief moment in the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show captured the imagination of automotive enthusiasts, leaving a lasting impression as a testament to Pininfarina’s creativity and Lancia’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design. Interestingly, the adaptation of the Coupe model to match the Spider’s configuration showcases the enduring appeal of the prototype, even decades after its initial unveiling. While not an official production model, this modified Coupe serves as a homage to the innovative spirit of the Gamma Spider and its role in automotive history.
