Lancia Prisma

The Lancia Prisma designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

The Lancia Prisma was a stylish yet practical mid-size sedan, produced between 1982 and 1989 in the Lancia Chivasso and Fiat Rivalta plants. Designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and built on the Lancia Delta platform, the Prisma combined elegance and functionality, quickly becoming a favorite among those looking for a refined yet reliable car. The first-generation Prisma featured a classic and understated design, appealing to customers who appreciated subtle sophistication. Inside, it boasted a well-appointed cabin with a dashboard full of instrumentation and premium materials. Optional extras included air conditioning, alloy wheels, and a split-folding rear seat, making it a comfortable and versatile choice. Under the hood, the Prisma was offered with 1.3L, 1.5L, and 1.6L petrol engines, with the latter featuring a twin-cam design. Diesel lovers could opt for the 1.9L naturally aspirated or turbocharged versions, which later appeared in the Fiat Ritmo and Regata. By 1986, over 200,000 units had been sold, and Lancia introduced a refreshed model with revised styling, enhanced interiors, and additional engine options. The front end received new bumpers with optional fog lights, a larger grille, and updated taillights. The dashboard and climate control system were also improved. A significant update was the introduction of the 1.6L fuel-injected engine, producing 109 HP, making it one of the most advanced in its class. A 2.0L 4WD version was also added, delivering 115 HP and giving the Prisma a sporty edge. By the end of production in 1989, Lancia had sold 317,378 Prismas, with the 1.6L version being the most popular. Its luxurious LX trim and exclusive features made it a desirable car for those who wanted a taste of Italian elegance. Even Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli had a one-off Prisma, fitted with a 200 HP 2.0L Turbo engine from the Delta. Originally red, it was later painted Lancia blue to blend in—a true example of power hidden in plain sight!
