Lincoln Indianapolis
The Lincoln Indianapolis: a futuristic study designed by Boano.
Vehicle Overview
The Lincoln Indianapolis was Introduced at the 1955 Turin Motor Show and was badged as “An Exclusive Study by Boano Torino.” It building costs was $30.000 at that time which equals to around $350.000 of todays money. The futuristic design of the Lincoln Indianapolis was inspired by jet aircraft of the day. The result was a flamboyant, bold and yet elegant. After the Indianapolis was shown in Turin by Boano, it was sent to the United States where it was consigned back to Henry Ford II which used it as personal car for many years. The car was entrusted to Gian Carlo Boano, who was tasked with building a car that would attract attention at the 1955 Turin auto show. As a result of this, Ford proposed a 10-year contract with the Italian designer, but he decided to enter into agreements with Fiat. The car had exhausts inserted in side sections right next to the engine compartment, and not at the front as is the case with most cars. In the tail section were faux air intakes that were meant to give the car aggressiveness. As a chassis, that of the Lincoln Capri was reused. The body was entirely painted a flashy orange color and few chrome trim was used. The powerplant installed was a 225-hp 341 cu Y-Block managed by a three-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission.
