Proton EMAS

The Proton EMAS designed by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

The Proton EMAS represents a bold vision for the future of eco-friendly urban transportation, designed by Italdesign Giugiaro and developed in collaboration with Proton. Unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the EMAS was presented as a hybrid vehicle designed to meet the demands of modern, environmentally-conscious driving. The acronym “EMAS” stands for Eco Mobility Advance Solution, and the name “emas” translates to “gold” in Malay, symbolizing its value and innovation in the automotive world. Originally intended to be Malaysia’s and Proton’s flagship global vehicle, the EMAS aimed to enter production by 2012. Despite its promising start, the concept car had not transitioned to production as of August 2014. The EMAS also inspired a related concept, the Lotus Ethos, a plug-in hybrid city car developed by Proton’s subsidiary, Lotus Cars. The Proton EMAS is built on a modified Toyota iQ platform, featuring revised suspension and steering while incorporating entirely new components elsewhere. It is powered by a combination of a 16.5 kWh electric battery and a range extender engine from Lotus Engineering. This engine, a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder with a single cam and four valves per cylinder, is both lightweight at 56 kg and highly efficient, optimized for performance at 1,500 and 3,500 rpm with power outputs of 20 hp and 47 hp, respectively. The engine delivers peak torque of 107 Nm at 2,500 rpm, complementing the 100 X 31 Ahr Cells, 370-volt battery system. The EMAS offers a full range of 350 miles, with CO2 emissions rated at 60 g/km. It can accelerate to 60 mph in 14 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 105 mph. The vehicle features 18″ wheels with 215/45 tires and is equipped with MacPherson strut suspension at both the front and rear, alongside a torsion beam. The EMAS, while remaining a concept, exemplifies innovative strides in hybrid technology and eco-friendly design.
