Volvo SCC

The Volvo SCC developed by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

The Volvo SCC employs a variety of new technologies that enhance personal safety, starting from the fingerprint key. Developed in collaboration with Italdesign, the SCC has a remote unit called the Volvo Personal Communicator or VPC. After pressing the fingerprint onto the pad of the VPC, the car recognises the driver, allows him to enter without a key. Then it starts up and automatically adjusts the interior to their personal settings. Heartbeat sensors are another feature. If someone has broken into the car, Volvo’s heartbeat sensor will detect his presence. It then sends a signal to the drivers VPC giving the driver the option of activating a panic button. The Volvo SCC gives the driver the best possible view of the road. Using infrared sensors and cameras, the Volvo pinpoints the location of the drivers eyes and automatically adjusts the steering wheel, centre console, pedals and seat accordingly. In order to create better visibility, the Volvo’s A pillars are partially transparent increasing frontal visibility while the B pillars are placed inward increasing rearward visibility. Sensors have also been incorporated into both the rear-view-mirror and rear bumper to alert the driver should a situation indicate danger. The car also has a rear-facing camera mounted in the roof header. It displays images from behind the car to a mini monitor positioned in front of the driver making it easier to reverse should a passenger’s head be blocking the drivers view. The SCC also has flashing brake lights. If the driver should brake suddenly the brake lights flash (the harder the brake, the faster they flash) alerting the traffic behind of a possible emergency situation. As the car changes its speed, or takes curves, the headlights adjust their beam pattern accordingly to provide better vision. The SCC also has a nightvision display that illuminates objects, animals or other vehicles that are obscured by darkness. A further refinement is the collision warning sensor. As soon as the gap between the Volvo and the car ahead is too narrow, the car’s collision warning device activates a red warning signal, and projects a virtual brake light onto the windshield. The 4-point seat belt, by forming a cross-brace across the chest the system, secures passengers firmly in their seat. The centre buckle belt, used by racers and child safety seats, has proven to effectively secure passengers in the event of a rollover, front or side collision. The rear seats have electrically adjustable cushions making it convenient to match a child’s height, ensuring visibility, comfort and the right seat belt geometry. The front portion of the rear seat can be folded, allowing shorter legs to dangle at a comfortable 90-degree angle over the edge of the seat.
