BMW Karmann Asso di Quadri
The BMW Karmann Asso di Quadri by Italdesign Giugiaro.
Vehicle Overview
The BMW Asso di Quadri concept emerged from the creative collaboration between automotive design maestro Giorgetto Giugiaro (Italdesign) and the German coachbuilder Karmann. Taking cues from the BMW 320 (e21), Giugiaro crafted a vision that blended elements from iconic predecessors like the Volkswagen Scirocco and the 2002 Touring, resulting in a silhouette both familiar and forward-thinking. Intent on integrating the Asso di Quadri into BMW’s production lineup, the design exuded a realistic aura, poised to capture the essence of the automotive market. However, despite its potential, BMW declined to pursue the project further. The decision stemmed from the company’s strategic focus on elevating its positioning in the market, engaging in a fierce competition with arch-rival Mercedes-Benz. Distinct from its namesakes, the Asso di Quadri bore little resemblance beyond its moniker to predecessors like the Asso di Picche (1973) or the Asso di Fiori (1979), marking its place in the Italdesign Aces series. Giugiaro’s design journey saw a departure from the marked, aggressive lines of the Asso di Picche, opting instead for a softer, more aerodynamic aesthetic. Notably, visible drip channels were eliminated, contributing to a cleaner, sleeker profile. In a nod to automotive evolution, the Asso di Quadri introduced innovative features such as windows devoid of chrome-plated rims, seamlessly bonded to the bodywork. This design choice reflected both a regression to earlier models like the Bertone-built Alfa Romeo Canguro from 1964, while simultaneously pushing boundaries forward, akin to the Isuzu Piazza. The Asso di Quadri concept stands as a testament to the intersection of creativity and pragmatism in automotive design. Though its journey to production was halted, its legacy persists as a symbol of innovation and ambition within the industry. Giugiaro’s vision, realized through the collaboration of talented minds at Italdesign, continues to inspire automotive enthusiasts and industry professionals alike, reminding us of the endless possibilities inherent in the pursuit of excellence.
