The Fiat 500 Elegance, a Spiaggina designed for Savio which was the latest proposal by Mario Boano before going to manage the Fiat Styling Department: The unique ‘beach car’ was built by Carrozzeria Savio of Turin and displayed at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, appearing on the cover of Auto Italiana magazine’s edition covering the event.
Although one of Italy’s lesser known coachbuilders, Carrozzeria Savio could trace its origins back as far as 1919 when it was founded in Turin by brothers Antonio and Guiseppe Savio. Commencing with a contract from Itala, Savio went on to build bodies for all of Italy’s major motor manufacturers, concentrating on FIAT chassis after WW2. In 1965 Savio launched the Moke-like Jungla recreational vehicle, based on the FIAT 600 (and later 850), the success of which almost certainly killed off the beach car project.

The birth of the Spiaggina (Spiaggia = Beach) takes place in the immediate post-war period at the initiative of some Italian coachbuilders which transformed small mass production cars in order to make them suitable for the needs of wealthy customers during the holiday period in the seaside resorts.
