Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Touring

Chassis

#05

Carrozzeria Touring build on the chassis of the Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa two speciments, a two and a four door.

Vehicle Overview

Following the conclusion of the Second World War, Isotta Fraschini sought to re-enter the automotive production arena with the unveiling of the 8C Monterosa, a successor to the pre-war Tipo 8. In 1947, this new model made its debut, showcasing a distinctive design featuring a cantilevered rear engine. However, despite its innovative approach, the 8C Monterosa faced challenges, particularly in terms of cost, and the ambitious project never transitioned to full-scale production. Between 1947 and 1949, Isotta Fraschini produced five prototypes, each featuring unique bodies crafted by renowned Italian coachbuilders Zagato, Touring, and Boneschi. Despite the collaboration with these esteemed artisans, the model’s high production costs proved to be a barrier to its commercial success. Among the prototypes, Carrozzeria Touring crafted two specimens on the 8C Monterosa chassis, with one being a four-door variant. The particular model discussed here was unveiled in 1947 at both the Paris Motor Show and the Carrozzeria Exhibition in Milan. This car, presented as an embodiment of Italian automotive ingenuity, ultimately remained in the possession of Isotta Fraschini until it eventually joined the esteemed Lopresto Collection. Regrettably, despite its unique design and the efforts of celebrated coachbuilders, the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8C Monterosa did not materialize as a production vehicle. Nevertheless, these prototypes, including the Carrozzeria Touring specimens, stand as testaments to the post-war automotive experimentation and the challenges faced by manufacturers in a rapidly changing industry.
