Stutz Blackhawk II

The Stutz Blackhawk series II built by Carrozzeria Saturn.

Vehicle Overview

The Stutz Blackhawk II, the second iteration of the exclusive Stutz Blackhawk series, marked a significant evolution in design and production when it was introduced in 1972. Produced only for a single year, the Blackhawk II featured a comprehensive redesign that, while staying true to Virgil Exner’s original stylistic cues, introduced a more streamlined and cost-efficient approach. The intricate detailing of the earlier model was simplified, making the second series easier and more economical to manufacture. Manufacturing was handled by the in-house carrozzeria Saturn, and the car was again built on General Motors’ G platform. However, for the Blackhawk II, the dimensions—including the wheelbase—were precisely aligned with those of the Pontiac Grand Prix, which served as the technical base. The windshield was updated to a cleaner, unbroken design, removing the previously used center bar. The side windows, along with a unique small rear side window found only on this series, also mirrored those of the Grand Prix, giving the Blackhawk II a more cohesive and production-friendly form. While the signature exposed spare wheel remained visually present on the trunk, it was no longer functional as a bumper substitute. Instead, the car now featured a full-width rear bumper borrowed from the Grand Prix, subtly modified with decorative chrome struts to preserve the luxury aesthetic. A standout feature exclusive to this model year was the so-called “hump trunk” or tonneau—a metal addition to the trunk lid designed to expand cargo space. Though this feature disrupted the otherwise sleek lines of the vehicle and was visually polarizing, only five to six units were ever produced with it, making them highly collectible today. The Stutz Blackhawk II remains a fascinating chapter in the marque’s history—a rare blend of American opulence and European coachbuilding finesse, tailored for a very exclusive clientele.
